Semifinals are set in the Big Six playoffs

The first round is over and the semifinalists are now known in the Big Six Hockey League’s playoffs. The first team to win their series were the second-ranked Redvers Rockets, who swept the seventh place Oxbow Huskies in two straight.

The first round is over and the semifinalists are now known in the Big Six Hockey League’s playoffs.

The first team to win their series were the second-ranked Redvers Rockets, who swept the seventh place Oxbow Huskies in two straight. Last Thursday, they defeated Oxbow 9-3 and Sunday in Oxbow, the Rockets eliminated the Huskies with a 7-1 win.

Jordon Miller scored two goals and two assists in Thursday’s victory and Dakota Rose added two goals and an assist. Taysen Holt scored two with an assist in the loss. Then on Sunday, Brady Gaudet scored a pair of second period goals as the Rockets cruised to victory, with Drew Hoff scoring two more. 

The fifth place Wawota Flyers swept the fourth place Yellow Grass Wheat Kings with a 6-3 win in Yellow Grass Wednesday and a 4-2 in in Wawota Monday. The series was a rematch of last year’s Big Six final.

Wawota’s Ryan Taylor scored two goals and an assist and Taylor Ernst added an empty net goal in the penalty filled first game. Kyle Myrgold scored a goal and an assist for Yellow Grass.

A much tamer battle Monday saw a tighter game end with a Taylor goal with 1:29 left in the third period, with Riley Riddell getting a pair of assists early in the game. Troy Miller and Dustin Chartrand scored for Yellow Grass.

The first ranked Carnduff Red Devils made quick work of the eighth place Carlyle PureChem Cougars, sweeping them in two straight. Carnduff took Game 1 6-2 on Feb. 14 in Carnduff, and Game 2 4-1 six days later in Carlyle. Trevor Geiger scored two goals and an assist for Carnduff in Game 1, and Matt Audette had a goal and two assists.

The Bienfait Coalers, who finished third in the regular season, swept the sixth place Midale Mustangs in two straight, taking Game 1 9-3 on Feb. 16 and Game 2 5-2 on Feb. 20. Wyatt Garagan had two goals with three assists in Game 1, Dylan Herzberg notched two goals and two assists, and Payden Benning added two goals with an assist. Steven Lindenbach scored two goals and an assist for the Mustangs.

In Game 2, Herzberg led the way with two goals for the Coalers, while Garrett Lasko contributed three helpers. Garagan, Keegan Malaryk and Brennan Wrigley also scored.

Tyler Hoium and Logan Martinson scored for the Mustangs.

The Red Devils will face the Flyers in one semifinal series, while the Rockets will play the Coalers in the other.
