The Yorkton Terriers and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League have announced that they have severed ties with suspended forward Greg Mulhall for the rest of the 2019-20 season, following a video Mulhall posted Saturday.
The Terriers announced on Sunday they had released Mulhall. The league also issued a statement saying they had taken the rare step of severing ties with Mulhall.
Mulhall has been serving a 25-game suspension for a hit on Melville Millionaires goaltender Berk Berkeliev in the opening weekend of the SJHL season. The hit and suspension gained national attention. Berkeliev was hospitalized in the incident, and hasn’t played since.
Saturday night, Mulhall posted a video on social media with multiple profanities about the incident and Berkeliev, which led to his release.
Mulhall was in his second season with the Terriers. He spent 30 games with the team last season, recording two goals and four points in 30 games. He also had 73 penalty minutes.
Mulhall issued a news release on Sunday afternoon, apologizing to Berkeliev, the Terriers and Millionaires organizations and the SJHL. He also said he takes full responsibility for his actions.
