The Southeast Bantam AAA Athletics had a bit of a break from the Baseball Regina regular season and displayed a little bit of rust in a pair of recent losses.
The A's Are now 1-14 on the regular season with just a few games to go. Sunday in Regina, the Athletics lost 4-0 and had another loss with the score unavailable, both to the Regina Pacers.
“We had a 10-day layoff and I guess it showed in our hitting,” said Athletics head coach Trent Dorrence. “Our defence was great and I think our pitching was pretty good too. We're going to have to brush up on a few things in the (batting) cage again.”
During the layoff, they played a tournament and focussed on defence and fine tuning the pitching staff.
“We always continue to work on our batting as well,” Dorrence said. “That's one thing we are continuing to improve on.”
The schedule has backed up a bit now. They have a doubleheader Friday against the Regina Buffalos, a game in Weyburn Sunday and another home game Tuesday against Weyburn. Another doubleheader at home July 3 against the White Sox closes their regular season.
The team will enter a tournament in Melville the week before provincials, adding a few more games to sharpen up before then.
“The way the season is progressing, it's a perfect amount of ball to get strong and get hot for provincials.”
Although they are a AAA team for the season, the Athletics will be entered into the Bantam AA Tier I provincials, taking place in Unity.
“We've only played one Saskatoon team that'll be in that tournament, and we tied them two weeks ago,” said Dorrence. “The other teams, I'm not too sure of just looking at their placings in the other leagues. I feel pretty confident we should have a pretty good shot of winning provincials this year.”
