Team Canada has a solid undefeated record, as they head into the semi-finals of the women’s hockey tournament being played at the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The team features Weyburn’s Alexis Larson, along with two of her teammates from the University of Regina Cougars, Kylie Gavelin, and Jaycee Magwood.
Canada has picked up three wins in the round robin so far. They opened the tournament with a 9-1 rout China, and followed it up by topping Great Britain 14-0. Then on Wednesday morning, they won 11-0 over Kazakhstan.
Larson picked up a goal and two assists in the win over Britain. So far Gavelin, who also played for the Southern Range Gold Wings before moving on to the U of R, has three assists in the tournament, while Magwood two goals and two assists.
The medal round for the tournament starts on Friday, February 3. None of the semi-final rounds had been determined as of publication deadlines, as Team Russia and Team Japan still had a game to play in the round robin on Thursday.
Larson will begin her fifth season with the University of Regina Cougars this fall, coming off a 2015-16 season in which she led Canada West defencemen with five goals. The blue-liner out of Weyburn also added nine helpers, good enough for fourth on the Cougars. Larson was also named a Canada West second-team all star.
