Team Kitz advance to provincials

Team Kitz's Chaelynn Kitz, Rikki Schick, Taylor Marcotte, Rachel Erickson and coach Shane Kitz have earned a spot at the 2016 Jiffy Lube Junior Womens' Provincial Championships.

The rink, who are comprised of athletes from Oxbow, Pleasantdale, Torquay and Maryfield and curl out of the Sutherland Curling Club, earned the berth in Swift Current on the weekend by competing in their second Junior Qualifying Bonspiel.

In Team Kitz’s first game of the competition they faced Bigger's Team Hollman and managed to capture their first win after running Hollman out of stones in the 10th end with a final score of 9-6.

The team's second game was against the Hannah Anderson rink out of Saskatoon. It was a low scoring game with five ends being blanked.

Team Anderson was able to steal a point in the fourth end. Team Kitz got a single back in the seventh end and managed to steal two in the eighth and ninth ends putting the team four up coming home without the hammer. They ran Anderson out of stones in the 10th end with the final score being 5-1.

Team Kitz's third game of the tournament was against Team Williamson from Regina. The team stole two points in the first end, a single in the second and two more in the third putting them out in front with a 5-0 lead.

Team Williamson was able to get on the board with a single point in the fourth end. Team Kitz drew for a big three-ender in the fifth end and Team Williamson shook hands making the final score 8-1. With their third win of the day they advanced to the A final on Saturday afternoon.  

In this A final Team Kitz played Team Thevenot from Saskatoon. They scored their deuce in the first end and forced Team Thevenot to a single in the second end.

Team Kitz and Team Thevenot traded singles back and forth in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth ends, making the score 4-3 for Team Kitz.

Team Kitz scored three points in the seventh end. Team Thevenot got a single back in the eight and managed to steal a single in the ninth and stole two more points in the 10th to tie the game, forcing it to an extra end.

In the extra end Team Kitz did not have to throw their final stone as Team Thevenot missed a difficult hit and roll attempt on their last stone. Team Kitz won the A final by a score of 8-7 capturing a berth to the 2016 Jiffy Lube Junior Womens' Provincials to be held in Saskatoon on Jan. 2 to 6.
