Team South East finishes with a flourish

It was another terrific day for Team South East during the final day of competition at the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games. The host team added to their medal count with success in canoe-kayak, equestrian, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

It was another terrific day for Team South East during the final day of competition at the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games.

The host team added to their medal count with success in canoe-kayak, equestrian, swimming, tennis and volleyball. In total, they won 15 medals, including six gold, three silver and six bronze on Saturday.  

Their unofficial medal count stands at 53, with 16 gold, 14 silver and 23 bronze. They finished third in the medal standings, and third in the Games flag standings, which is based on team finishes throughout the week. 

In the canoe-kayak mixed 200-metre canoe relay, the team of Kane Hooper, Anne-Marie McGowan, Savannah Pohl and Mason Thackeray took home the gold with a time of 59.85 seconds.

The team of Jamie Labbie, Lorynn Labbie, Arliss Sidloski and Alexis Vandermey won silver in the kayak female 200-metre relay with a time of 10 minutes and 9.67 seconds. Drew Barsness and Mitch Tuchscherer won silver in the male kayak 200-metre race in 39.90.

Drew and Erik Barsness won bronze in the male 200-metre canoe race in 1:02.05.

In equestrian, Team South East won gold in the team barrel racing event, with a total, four-race time of 1:13.814. Team members were Kia Rosenbaum and Kayla Wanner of Estevan, and McKenna Desautels of Zehner.

Team South East also won silver in dressage with a total score of 123.4. Robynne Moreau of Redvers, Rylie Reichel of Edenwold and Hailey Olson of Maryfield were on the team.

In swimming, Aden Dickinson of Emerald Park won his third gold medal of the Games in the male 50-metre freestyle swim.

Dickinson also won silver in the male 200-metre backstroke with a time of 2:28.60, and bronze in the male 400-metre swim with a time of 4:54.24.

Josh Wilson of Estevan won bronze in the male 50-metre fly with a 33.02. The team of Dickinson, Wilson, Carson Wheeler of Estevan and Tre Thompson of Weyburn took bronze in the 4x100 metre medley relay.

Team South East also scooped up a pair of medals in volleyball. The female team defeated Team Rivers West 2-0 (25-11, 25-13) to win gold, much to the delight of a large crowd that packed the Estevan Comprehensive School’s gymnasium. Earlier in the day, the South East qualified for the gold medal game with a 2-1 (25-11, 23-25, 15-8) victory over Saskatoon.

As for the male team, they dropped a 2-1 (25-22, 19-25, 15-7) decision to Saskatoon in the gold medal game in front of another boisterous crowd at the school. They reached the final by beating Rivers West 2-0 (32-30, 25-20) in the semi-final.

Team South East also captured a gold medal in tennis. Clark Cabiluna and and Aden Haywood, both of Estevan, beat Team Regina 2-0 (6-2, 6-3) to win the gold medal, and finished 5-0 during the three days of competition.

Hunter Wallster of Estevan dropped a 2-0 (6-0, 6-0) decision to Colby Hirsch from Parkland Valley in the boys’ singles final.

In softball, Team South East dropped a 10-8 decision to Prairie Central in the fifth place game, and wound up in sixth. Prairie Central led 10-1 after the second inning, but the South East chipped away at the lead. They scored twice in the seventh to pull within two, but couldn’t get any closer.

The male soccer team closed out competition yesterday with a 3-1 victory over Parkland Valley to finish fifth.

The Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games concluded Saturday afternoon with the closing ceremonies at Affinity Place.
