Team South East wins 13 more medals

Team South East thrived on land and in the water during the fifth day of competition at the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games. The host entry won 13 medals, bringing their total to 38. They have won 10 gold, 11 silver and 17 bronze.

Team South East thrived on land and in the water during the fifth day of competition at the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games.

The host entry won 13 medals, bringing their total to 38. They have won 10 gold, 11 silver and 17 bronze.

Much of their success was in the canoe-kayak event at Boundary Dam Reservoir. Mitch Tuchscherer and Jamie Labbie won gold in the mixed kayak 200 metres with a time of 45.11 seconds. Savannah Pohl and Alexis Vandermey won gold in the female canoe 200 metres in a time of one minute and 6.43 seconds. Tuchscherer and Evan Barsness teamed up to win gold in male canoe 4,000 metres with a time of 27:36.62.

Morgan Sidloski and Drew Barsness won silver in the mixed 1,000-metre kayak race with a time of 5:07.52.

Tuchscherer, Pohl, Evan Barsness and Alex Sidloski won silver in the four-person mixed canoe with a time of 6:46.22.

Pohl and Sidloski teamed up to win silver in the female canoe 1,000 metres with a time of 7:16.03, while Jamie Labbie and Arliss Sidloski won bronze in that event with a time of 7:40.32.

Drew Barsness won bronze in the male kayak individual 4,000 metres with a time of 22:16.04.

All members of the canoe-kayak team are from Weyburn. 

In swimming, Aden Dickenson won his second gold medal of the games, this time in the male 50-metre backstroke with a time of 31.63 seconds.

Team South East won bronze in the male 4x50 freestyle relay with a time of 2:02.85. Members were Dickinson, Levi Cooley of Oxbow, Tre Thompson of Weyburn and Josh Wilson of Estevan.

In equestrian barrel racing, Kayla Wanner (silver) and Kia Rosenbaum (bronze), both of Estevan, won medals. Wanner had a time of 1:14.390 for her four trips, and Rosenbeau was right behind her with a time of 1:14.877.

Team South East took home one other equestrian medal, as Rebecca Russell won bronze in show jumping with a score of 33.

Both the male and the female volleyball team will play for a medal tomorrow. The female team opened with a 2-1 (23-25, 25-22, 15-9) loss to Regina, but recovered to beat Lakeland 2-1 (18-25, 25-20, 15-8) in the quarter-final.

Team South East will play Saskatoon Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Spruce Ridge School. The winner will advance to the gold medal game.

The male team followed a similar path to the female squad. The boys opened with a 2-0 (25-21, 25-15) loss to Saskatoon, but recovered to knock off Regina 2-0 (25-9, 25-15) and advance to the semifinal round.

They will play Rivers West at 10 a.m. at Spruce Ridge School.

In softball, Team South East lost 4-2 to Rivers West in their final round robin game. The South East finished the round robin with a 1-2 record, and they will play Prairie Central at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Pleasantdale Ball Diamonds in the fifth place game.

In tennis, Hunter Wallster of Estevan beat Nathan Ellingson 2-0 (6-0, 6-2) to finish the round robin with a 2-1 record. In the first round of the playoffs, he lost 2-0 (6-1, 6-0) to Regina’s William Lowe.

Wallster will play in the bronze medal game tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.

In boys’ doubles, Aden Haywood and Clark Cabiluna defeated Prairie Central 2-0 (6-1, 6-1) to finish the round-robin with a 3-0 record. In the first round of the playoffs, they defeated Parkland Valley 2-0 (6-3, 6-4).

They will face Regina in the gold medal game.

The male soccer team wrapped up their tournament with a pair of wins to finish fifth. They rallied from a 2-0 deficit in their first game to defeat Rivers West 4-2, and they Parkland Valley 2-1 in the fifth place game, avenging a 3-1 loss to Parkland Valley the day before.
