The athletes of Team South East have another reason to be proud of having been in the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games. The team was given additional recognition for their performance this year. Team South East is the 2016 recipient of the Joe Griffith Trophy. The trophy was presented them by Sask. Games Council executive director Mark Bracken, on Aug. 4.
The Joe Griffith Trophy is an award given to the district team showing the greatest degree of improvement, in their point standings from previous Games. Team South East’s performance in this year’s Game was compared to its performance in the previous Summer Games in Meadow Lake, in 2012. The improvement from the Summer Games in Meadow Lake showed Team South East had an overall increase of 9.6 per cent.
Athletes from Team South East including Lais Lindquist, Ethan Bill and Zach Ashworth accepted the award, along with Chef De Mission Helen Fornwald, during a brief ceremony at Affinity Place.
Check out next week’s edition of the Mercury for more details on the award.
