The Estevan TS&M peewee AAA Tornadoes dropped a 12-11 decision to the Melville Millionaires on Saturday afternoon at Cactus Park.

“Our pitchers were throwing well and our pitchers are throwing strikes,” said coach Ryan Siever. “That part hasn’t been an issue; it hasn’t been for a while.”

But they suffered from some mental lapses on the base pads, and they had a few errors defensively.

“We’re close, but we’re just not quite finishing it out,” said Siever.

Starting pitcher Carter Porter tossed 4 2/3 innings for the Tornadoes. He wasn’t at his pitch limit, but Siever said Porter was feeling sore, so he was removed from the game before reaching his pitch count.

Siever also applauded Porter’s offensive contributions.

Lucas Fleck and Spencer Sauter also had hits to generate runs.

Siever was also impressed the Tornadoes scored a couple of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to nearly tie the game.

The game was delayed by a couple of hours due to a thunderstorm that rolled through Estevan on Saturday afternoon. Siever said he was pleased with the work of the volunteer crews to prepare the field quickly after the rain stopped.

The Melville game was supposed to be part of a double-header, but the second game was postponed. A makeup date hasn’t been announced.

Five members of the Tornadoes then travelled to Regina on Sunday to try out for the Saskatchewan Selects team that will represent this province at nationals later this year. Another tryout will happen in Saskatoon before the final roster is decided.

The next action for the Tornadoes will be the annual Weyburn peewee tournament this weekend.
