The Estevan TS&M Peewee AA Tornadoes played four close games on the weekend, and picked up their first win of the year in one of those close games.
The Tornadoes split a doubleheader against the Swift Current 57s on Saturday at Cactus Park. They dropped a 10-7 decision in the first game, although they trailed 10-1 partway through the game, and then they won 8-7 in the second.
Estevan had dropped two games in Swift Current the previous weekend to start the season.
“It was nice to get that first win in the books,” said coach Ryan Siever. “The boys played really well in that second game, and the bats came alive.”
Siever believes his team gained a lot of momentum from the first game on Saturday, thanks to the way they were able to make the game close.
“It was nice to show them we were still in the game and they had to use some of their best players to finish us off,” Siever said regarding the first game.
The following day, they visited the Melville Millionaires and dropped a 12-11 decision, and then played to a 10-10 tie.
They scored five runs in the top of the first inning of the first game versus Melville, but Siever said they made some bad base-running decisions and they struggled defensively as the game went along.
However, they hit the ball well.
“If we play clean defence and we make good base-running decisions, that first game is easily ours,” said Siever. “It was a good lesson for the boys to learn that not everything’s going to go your way on the field.”
The pitchers played well in the second game, but again defensive errors cost them. But Siever was pleased they were able to score three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, and then shut the Mills down in the final inning.
The Tornadoes were scheduled to play Tuesday night in Weyburn. (Results were not available at press time). Then they will be in Regina for the Legacy Tournament this weekend.
