The Southeast Twins Performance Pump Services midget AAA baseball team is holding an open tryout for interested midget-age baseball players at Lynn Prime Park April 2 afternoon.
“It's going to be full-on hitting, pitching, fielding (and) out-fielding,” said Twins head coach Blaine Kovach, noting the tryout will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. “It'll be more generated like a practice that we'd have as a Twins team during the season, just to get a good view of everyone.”
The Lynn Prime Park tryout is the second of three the team is holding in an attempt to field the best 15-member squad in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League (SPBL) this season. The Twins previously held a pitching, hitting and speed tryout on March 29 in the multipurpose room at the Estevan Leisure Centre. The final open tryout will run on April 4 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Estevan Comprehensive School gymnasium.
Kovach said there will be eight returning players from last season who will be vying for one of the 15 available spots on the team, but no position is guaranteed. He said it's a new season and a new team, so whoever comes to the tryouts with the best attitude and attains the best results will get a spot on the Twins.
“They can expect to get out there and work hard because it's going to be a battle this year for spots,” said Kovach, noting anyone born from 1998 to 2000 can try out. “The spots for the team aren't for sure's and even returning players have to give it everything they've got to make it. It's going to be really competitive this year especially with the numbers that are supposedly coming out this year.”
The Twins' final roster will be finalized as soon as the third tryout is finished. Team practices will begin in the following days in an attempt to get ready for SPBL opening day on April 23.
