The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins showcased their abilities for their fans during the team’s inaugural skills competition Saturday afternoon at Affinity Place.

Players were divided into two teams, Team Black and Team White, and competed in five different categories: fastest skater, hardest shot, most accurate shot, the puckhandling relay and the shootout.

Team White won the skills competition 49-41 over Team Black.

Among the highlights of the day was the showdown in the fastest skater between the Davis brothers, Jayden and Cody of Alameda. Cody, who spent the season with the midget AAA Moose Jaw Generals and has joined the Bruins for the postseason, was on Team Black, and he defeated Team White’s Jayden, who is in his third year with the Bruins and rates among the fastest skaters in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

Young fans enjoyed created posters to support the team in the playoffs, and there was a fat head auction, in which fans could bid on oversized heads of players attached to sticks.

A community skate with the team followed the skills competition.

The day will wrap up with a fundraising pasta supper at the Beefeater Plaza at 5 p.m.

Next week’s edition of the Mercury will have a full recap of the skills competition.
