They Weyburn Volleyball Club wrapped up their season this past weekend at the 15 and under West National Volleyball Championships in Regina.
They went in to the tournament as the third seed from Saskatchewan after winning bronze at Saskatchewan provincials.
The team had a strong showing on May 21, the first day of pool play. They defeated Prairie Fire Black (MB4: ranked fourth in Manitoba) 25-7, 26-24 and Canuck Red (AB9: ranked ninth in Alberta) 25-8, 25-20 and then fell to the Jr. Bisons Gold (MB2) 14-25, 8-25. They finished second in their pool which advanced them into Tier 1 Power Pools.
In the Power Pools on May 22 they were stacked up against some tough competition and fell to Thunder Blue (BC2) 25-21, 12-25, 9-15; Shock (MB1) 15-25, 11-25; and Saskatoon Smash (SK1) 22-25, 25-18, 7-15.
After placing fourth in their Power Pool they were sent to the Tier 3 playoffs, played May 23. An early morning win over Seaside Storm (BC7) 25-10, 25,23 completed the quarterfinal. Their winning streak continued as they were triumphant over SAVC Flare (AB7) 26-25 and 25-20 in the semi final.
In the division one, Tier 3 championship game they fell to the Canuck Black (AB2) in three sets 25-23, 19-25, 4-15.
This placed them second in Tier 3, earned them a silver medal, and placed them 18th out of the 87 girls teams who competed at West Nationals.
The 15 and under had a successful 2016 season, medalling at each tournament they attended, with the exception of the Mizuno Northern Lights tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The opportunity for a team from Weyburn to compete at such high level is extraordinary.
The team has represented the City of Weyburn proudly at a national event; their teamwork, supreme sportsmanship and accomplishments are a true reflection of the dedication Coach Dustin Satre has provided to the club.
