Volunteers Needed Provincials

The G.F. Kells High School is set to be a hub of activity on Nov. 17-18 with the girls 3A Provincial Volleyball to be held.

Coach/Manager of the team Trent Johnson explains, “Carlyle will be the first gym and Oxbow will be the second gym.”

“Opening ceremonies will take place here in Carlyle in the gym on the Friday at 10:45 a.m.”

The tournament will see 10 teams compete between the two communities with playoffs beginning on Nov. 18 at 12:30 p.m., while the Bronze medal match is expected for 4:30 p.m. and the final is to be held at 5:30 p.m.

The excitement surrounding the big day has been well supported with fantastic sponsors, Johnson says: “The support has been amazing. Thank you to all of our sponsors, it’s been excellent. They’ve given either monetary donations or products, it’s been really wonderful.”

“Thank you to the staff and our executive as well who have worked on this.”

Right now, Johnson says, the biggest need though is volunteers.

“We will need approximately 75 volunteers throughout the weekend,” Johnson explained. “We will need people working in the canteen, at the gate, the clothing boutique, and minor officials [linesing and score keeping].”

If interested in helping out contact Johnson at G.F. Kells: (306)453-2500.

He added, “We will be having a welcome breakfast for teams, parents of players, and for all volunteers on Friday, between 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Hall.”

All volunteers will also receive a volunteer t-shirt for donating their time.

As for the competition Johnson is looking forward to this season in general.

“We came out with a good start this season at our home tournament and we’ll be going to Kipling, Weyburn, and Yorkton in coming weeks,” Johnson stated. “The girls played phenomenally and it was a great learning experience for the rookies.”

“We’re very optimistic this year and provincials will be an exciting time with this group of girls we have.”

Although optimistic, Johnson knows that last year’s champions from Waldheim, will likely be back to defend their gold medal; which means Johnson and Amy Jackson (coach) will be focused on solidifying skills, encouraging team chemistry, and mental toughness.

“It’s going to be a very busy two days and there’ll be lots of great volleyball!” Johnson added
