The Mark Walter rink, competing out of the Lampman Curling Club, won two of seven games at the provincial senior men’s curling championship in Melville from Feb. 27 to March 3.

The eight-team tournament used a round robin format. The Walter rink, with lead Dave Wetsch, second Jim Brown and third Garry Kreutzer, dropped their first four games, recovered to win two, and then lost their final match.

Their first contest was a 9-5 loss to Brad Heidt, a game that Walter led 5-3 after five ends, only to give up three in the sixth and a steal of three more in the seventh.

The next game was a 6-5 loss to Brian Humble. Walter had leads of 2-0 after the first end and 3-1 after three.

Walter then dropped a 7-1 decision to Bruce Korte, with their lone point coming in the fourth end, and lost 6-3 to Daryl Williamson, in which two of Walter’s points came in the fourth end.

The Lampman entry then pieced together back-to-back one-point wins. They defeated Lloyd Fell 6-5, thanks in large part to a three-point score in the third end. The game was tied at 5-5 after seventh end.

Walter put it away with one in the eighth.

Their next game was a 5-4 win over Rod Quintin. Walter rallied from a 3-1 deficit after three ends by giving up only one point the rest of the way, and scored two in the eighth and final end for the victory.

Their final game was a 7-1 loss to Brent Franko. Walter’s lone point came in the fourth end, pulling to within two, but then Franko added three in the fifth to pull away.
