Water polo athletes at Alberta Open

Members of the Estevan Sharks water polo team have been busy of late, competing with Team Sask. This past weekend, six local athletes competed for Team Sask at the Alberta Open in Calgary.

Members of the Estevan Sharks water polo team have been busy of late, competing with Team Sask.

This past weekend, six local athletes competed for Team Sask at the Alberta Open in Calgary. Also, there were three local swimmers who recently played with the 14-under Prairie Cat western league team in Regina.

For the Alberta Open, Taeghen Hack and Emily Marshall competed in the 14-and-under girls division and Mikayla Hack, and Josie, Alex and Charlotte Andrist played for the 12-and-under girls team.

Cameron Gillingham was the local representative in the 12-and-under boys division.

The 12-and-under girls’ team won gold in the tournament, going undefeated. In their first game, they defeated Calgary 14-4, and the following game, they earned a 12-9 victory against the Edmonton Thunderbirds.  

The team also earned a 14-3 win over the Edmonton Tsunami and beat Fraser Valley 16-4. They defeated the Thunder Birds 15-8 in the final.

The 14-and-under girls team finished with bronze in the tournament. They started the tournament out strong, defeating the Calgary Renegades Black 16-1, and in their following game, they beat the Edmonton Tsunami 14-3. In their next two games of the tournament, they fell 8-5 to the Calgary Renegades Gold and dropped a 14-3 decision to the Edmonton Thunderbirds.

In their final game, they lost 12-9 to the Calgary Renegades Gold, which resulted in a bronze medal.

Cameron Gillingham earned bronze with the 12-and-under boys team. The team was on the winning side in their first game, defeating Edmonton 16-6. And in their second game they beat the Calgary Seawolves 14-5. They suffered a 13-3 lost to the Calgary Wild in their third game, but went back to their winning ways with a 9-7 victory over Calgary Malko.

The team was again matched up against Calgary Mako, but lost 8-7, talking home the bronze medal.

At the Alberta Open, awards were given out to players who stand out in each age division, and Josie Andrist won the most valuable goalie award for the 12-and-under age group. 

The three members who competed with the Prairie Cat’s 14-and-under team in the western league, were Gillingham, Logan Marshall and Mathew Getschel. They fell 28-3 to the first place Regina team. Marshall and Getschel both scored for the Prairie Cats, accounting for two of the three goals.

With the loss, the team finished third in the league, and will not be competing in the 14-and-under Western National Championship in Calgary.
