Weyburn Iron Pigs wrap up season against Regina Trappers

The Iron Pigs had a strong year, and Troy Miller was the league MVP

The Weyburn Iron Pigs lost out to the Regina Trappers in their best-of-three league championship finals by scores of 5-0 and 5-3, with the latter game held at Tom Laing Park on Wednesday evening.

In the nine years the team has been in the Qu’Appelle Valley Baseball League, this was the Iron Pigs fifth appearance in the finals, and it ended their 2021 season. The Pigs won the league championship in 2016.

In the home loss, Weyburn had a strong start, putting up two runs in the first inning and one more in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

The Trappers came back and scored all of their runs in the fourth inning, and neither team was able to score again for the rest of the game.

Troy Miller had a hit and a run, Brad Weisgerber had a run, a hit and an RBI, and Mike Onstad had two hits and an RBI. Luke Niemegeers had a run and two hits.

“One bad inning killed us,” said Weisgerber. “It was a great season though.”

Eric Evans was on the mound for the first four innings, and Niemegeers pitched for the final three. Evans allowed five hits and five runs, and had four strike-outs, while Niemegeers had seven strike-outs.

Following the game, Miller was awarded the Most Valuable Player award for the QVBL.
