WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings lost their Saturday night game to the Yorkton Terriers by a score of 4-1 at Crescent Point Place.
The Terriers got on the board in the first period with two quick goals, the first at 3:34, and the second only 13 seconds later.
There was no more scoring for the remainder of that period, and none in the second period. Yorkton added another at 21 seconds into the third period.
Weyburn got on the board with a goal by Kirk Mullen, unassisted, and the Red Wings pulled netminder Dazza Mitchell with about three minutes left, in the hopes of getting a quick goal, but the Terriers scored an empty netter with 39 seconds to go in the game.
Mitchell made 43 saves on 46 shots in his time in net. Yorkton was back for another game on Tuesday evening, past press deadlines, and they will host Weyburn on Friday, March 4.
Earlier in the week, Weyburn played back-to-back games in North Battleford, losing 3-0 on Feb. 22, and 4-1 on Feb. 23. Mullen scored the Wings’ lone goal in that game, assisted by Blake Norris and Matthew Reidy.
This will be a busy last week for the Red Wings, as after they visit Yorkton on Friday, they will be at home to host Estevan on Saturday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m.
They will finish out the season on the road, with a game versus the Melville Millionaires on Tuesday, March 8, and in Wilcox against the Notre Dame Hounds on March 9.
Prior to those road games, the Red Wings will hold a comedy night and awards banquet on Sunday, March 6, at the Weyburn Legion Hall.
The evening will see the supper served at 6 p.m., the awards will be presented at 7 and comedian Kelly Taylor will do his show at 8. Tickets are $60 each from the Red Wings office, or by emailing [email protected]
