"Nanananananananananana Batman!" Or in this case BatKid.
Saving Gotham City is just another day in the life of the caped crusader, but the great superhero recently found help in a pint sized hero.
While reading through the news I came across an inspiring story. The city of San Francisco was recently transformed into Gotham City for Miles Scott (5) who is recovering from leukemia.
The young boy's Make-A-Wish resulted in 10,000 people lending a hand to create a very special day for Scott.
The boy initially thought he was going to receive a batman costume, so he could dress like his absolute favourite superhero; but, the little boy got the surprise of a lifetime when he was then given a series of tasks to perform around the city alongside Batman.
After receiving his costume, BatKid's day of crimefighting started with the Chief of Police in San Francisco, Greg Suhr, asking BatKid for help.
The rest of his day consisted of him saving a damsel in distress who was tied up in a cable car where he was cheered on by hundreds of people. He was then taken to the financial district alongside Batman where they apprehended the Riddler.
The Penguin's plan was then foiled as BatKid and Batman disarmed a fake bomb to save Lou Seal, the San Francisco Giants mascot.
At the end of the day he was given the key to San Francisco by the mayor, Ed Lee, and a message from the White House came from President Barack Obama who praised the young hero, "Way to go, Miles! Way to save Gotham."
Approximately 7,000 people attended throughout the day to cheer on the young superhero and make his wish come true.
The young boy had a smile throughout the entire day and is one of the happiest international news stories I've read in quite awhile. It's kind of nice to know that in a world of war and recession that so many people can come together to simply make a kid's day.
Have you ever heard the phrase, "That restored my faith in humanity." Now my faith in humanity wasn't necessarily shaken before, but this was a very touching story which as I said in a world filled with troubles it was nice to see people coming together.
Often we hear of how small town neighbourliness in big centres like San Francisco is hard to find, but for something like a small child's wish to bring an entire city together is amazing.
Though this was a huge gesture that made this little boy's day, there are little gestures that can be made in the everyday to help make people's days a little bit better. Whether it is a smile while walking down the street or holding open a door there are little things that can brighten anyone's day.
Which in an increasingly anti-social world where being on the internet and communicating through text messages is the norm it is important to keep in mind we can't get too far away from our humanity.
I'm told often that I'm too nice by people, but really what is the point of being rude, condescending, or ignoring others. It's better to just be nice and polite, crack a few jokes, and get along with others because life is short.
