To the Editor:

Concerned parents and students of Weyburn Comprehensive School (WCS), along with area taxpayers, are astounded at the recent school board decision to remove Wade Oberg as the principal of WCS.

This outcome was based on an incident at a volleyball tournament. During the weekend of Oct. 20, the senior girls volleyball team attended a tournament in Saskatoon.

During a game, there was a coaching disagreement between the head coach and assistant coach Wade Oberg. As a result, the team forfeited the tournament and returned to Weyburn.

Immediately, the rumours and gossip circulated on social media both by those directly involved and those not even in attendance. This had a negative effect on students, parents and staff.

In the weeks that followed, Mr. Oberg was not at school. No explanation was given to the students or teachers at WCS, and no information was provided by the Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division or the director of education.

On Nov. 16, Discover Weyburn ran a story, “Public School Division comments on WCS principal situation.” It was stated by Lynn Little, director of education, that Mr. Oberg was on leave. There was no additional clarification provided.

On Nov. 22, Discover Weyburn provided an update to the principal situation at WCS. It was reported, “The principalship duties have been removed from Mr. Oberg,” said Lynn Little, director of education.

This decision is affecting 900 other students, teachers, staff and a community that has been the beneficiaries of Mr. Oberg’s commitment and dedication for the last 25 years. Is he to lose his career for choosing parental duties over assistant coaching obligations?

We understand the process is still ongoing. Has Mr. Oberg even had the opportunity to present his side of the story? We hope the appeal process will be transparent as it is imperative the elected board make the appropriate judgement regarding this high school volleyball incident.

Duncan Brock, Weyburn

On behalf of concerned parents and community of WCS, and the contributing taxpayers of the school district.
