My Nikkel's Worth

There have been some quite remarkable fundraisers ongoing in the the community and area, some I know people have been supporting wonderfully, and others they should maybe sit up up take note of.

There have been some quite remarkable fundraisers ongoing in the the community and area, some I know people have been supporting wonderfully, and others they should maybe sit up up take note of.

A primary factor in whether or not a person will support a given fundraiser, of course, is the cause or goal the fundraiser is going towards.

I noted this whilst out selling tickets for the Rotary Club's just -completed Golf Ball Drop fundraiser. On two separate occasions I helped man a table to sell these tickets, and the thing I noticed was, the STARS Air Ambulance was a big reason why some of the people bought their tickets. Some were attracted by the affordable $5 price and the possibility of winning $5,000, but I noted a few times people decided for sure to buy tickets because of STARS.

In one instance, a gentleman using a cane to help him walk came by with his wife, and they readily bought tickets, explaining that he had himself been helped by STARS after being in a collision by Francis or Sedley; because of their assistance, he was able to get good timely medical care for his severe injuries.

Anyway, the dropping of the golf balls was a great idea that will benefit STARS as well as help Rotary in the support of their many projects.

More recently, I came out to take photos of the "Royal Ball" put on by the Family Place.

This centre is widely known, and is deeply loved in the community, for very good reason - and it was so sweet seeing all these little ladies with wide eyes dressed up as princesses. There were a few guys, but not very many; a few princes and pirates would certainly have made the event a lot of fun, which it was already, thanks in big part to the big girls who dressed as beautiful princesses themselves and danced with the little ones, or painted their nails, or rode a magic carpet with them, in short giving them a really good couple of hours of fun.

A group with a lesser profile raising funds is the Pioneer Woman statue committee; to hear Ross McMurtry speak with such passion about the role pioneer women played to establish the very city and region we live in here in the southeast is an experience in itself. More importantly, he is so correct; we need to acknowledge the legacy and selfless sacrifice of life and strength and their years spent alone on the inhospitable prairie, because they wanted to establish a new and happier way of life for the generations to come.

Now we enjoy a great community, we ought to remember what these women did for us, so they are never forgotten, not only with the statue, but with stories about these women.
