Our summer fun awaits

The Victoria Day long weekend is often regarded as the unofficial start of summer, but for people in this area, many of the attractions associated with summer are already here. The Estevan Motor Speedway opened its 2018 season last Saturday.

The Victoria Day long weekend is often regarded as the unofficial start of summer, but for people in this area, many of the attractions associated with summer are already here.

The Estevan Motor Speedway opened its 2018 season last Saturday. The track will have a busy summer this year, and we can look forward to several classes racing each program.

The speedway has been an important part of this community since it opened in 2000. Not only does it give local racers a place to compete and fans a place to watch, but it also attracts a lot of drivers from the U.S.

Fishing season also opened last Saturday, and there were lots of anglers on the water. Others were on the shore, casting their fishing lines, looking for a good start to the year.

We’re pretty fortunate to have the bodies of water that we do, and the fishing that we do.

The Estevan Farmers’ Market sales started a few weeks ago with indoor sales. Their first outdoor sale is May 12. It’s another indicator that the beautiful weather associated with summer is here, even if the calendar says the first day of summer is a few days away.

Every year we hear the same old complaint from those who say there’s nothing to do in Estevan. We say they don’t know what they’re talking about.

There will be events for families and for individuals alike over the next few months. While many of us will miss the Beach Bash at Woodlawn Regional Park this summer, we can still look forward to races, farmers markets, baseball games, live theatre performances or community celebrations, we have a lot to look forward to.

And there are activities such as camping, fishing, boating and swimming for those who maybe aren’t so keen on events.

Looking for something free? Take a walk through the trails at the Woodlawn Regional Park or make use of the track at the Estevan Comprehensive School.

Obviously a lot of people will be out of town for a while once schools are out for summer holidays. But there will be a lot for the kids to do.

The City of Estevan’s Play Parks are an excellent program, one that we should all be proud of. They provide crafts and swimming for children on a daily basis, and they do it for free.

A number of community organizations and agencies offer summer camps for children as well.

The temperatures are warmer. The days are longer. Take advantage of them. Don’t be one of those who fritters the summer away by sitting on the couch, watching television reruns.

And don’t complain that there’s nothing to do in Estevan during the summer months. If you think there’s nothing to do in Estevan at this time of year, then perhaps the problem is with you.
