Penguins win the Stanley Cup

The Pittsburgh Penguins have won the 2016 Stanley Cup, getting past the San Jose Sharks 3-1 in Game 6 of the best-of-seven series.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have won the 2016 Stanley Cup, getting past the San Jose Sharks 3-1 in Game 6 of the best-of-seven series. The Sharks tied the game at 1-1 in the second but less than two minutes later, Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang scored the game-winning goal for Pittsburgh to make it 2-1. The Pens would add an empty net goal to ice the game. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was named the most valuable player for the post-season and received the Conn Smythe Trophy. This is Pittsburgh’s fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history.

In the CFL, the Saskatchewan Roughriders lost 28-16 to the B.C. Lions in their final pre-season game at old Mosaic Stadium. The Riders will close out the pre-season against the Edmonton Eskimos.

Other pre-season scores were: the Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat the Montreal Alouettes 36-13, the Edmonton Eskimos beat the Calgary Stampeders 23-13 and the Toronto Argonauts got past the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 25-16.

In the Arena Football League, the Philadelphia Soul hammered the L.A. Kiss 73-37 in a one-sided game. The Soul’s record is 9-2 and their next game is against the Arizona Rattlers.

Other scores from Week 11 were: the Orlando Predator got past the Cleveland Gladiators 59-56, the Arizona Rattlers hammered the Portland Steel 76-49 and the Jacksonville Sharks beat the Tampa Bay Storm 67-34.

The Toronto Blue Jays took three of four games from the Baltimore Orioles in Major League Baseball action. The Jays are in third place in their division.

In the Western Major Baseball League, the Regina Red Sox won two of their three games over the weekend. The Red Sox are in second place in the Eastern Division.

In NCAA Baseball, the Florida Gators beat the Florida State Seminoles in 5-0 in Game 2 of the Gainesville Super Regionals.
