Traditionally, the month of May in Weyburn is Cleanup Month, where groups and organizations and whole neighbourhoods are encouraged to get outside and clean up the streets and alleyways and parks of our fair city, preparing it for the summer season.
There doesn't seem to be much of that happening this year, as the City's Environmental Resources committee seems to have absorbed the Cleanup Committee. The landfill coupons came out a little later than usual - but what about the neighbourhood campaign? Are neighbourhoods still supposed to do a cleanup of their residential and playground areas?
For the sake of our families, our neighbourhoods and recreational areas, and the places where we work (if it's applicable), we need to take it on ourselves to ensure our areas where we live, work and play are cleaned up and looking nice; if not for a prize, we should do it for ourselves, and take pride in our beautiful prairie city.
In terms of work and construction sites, these areas are constantly in a state of flux with all of the construction activity going on, and it's sometimes hard to keep tabs on everything that's happening. With that said, the areas around the construction sites are often near parks and residential neighbourhoods, and some of these places are being filled up with refuse blown over from the construction sites, and this is not how it's supposed to happen.
At the very least, there should be refuse bins to collect up the little bits and pieces of garbage that accumulate over the course of a day of construction. Would it be so hard at the end of a day for the workers to take 15-20 minutes and clean up their areas if they don't have time during the day to keep up with the refuse collection?
Clearly there is going to be a lot of garbage created by the process of construction - but most construction sites keep the mess contained to their site, and clean it up afterwards so it's presentable. If the garbage is left where adjoining neighbours and the community at large is affected by it, then it's time to make an actual effort and clean it up.
Let's be responsible citizens, whether as residents in our local neighbourhoods, or as workers at a job-site in the city or in the country; those who are in charge of a job-site, can we take on the challenge to pick up our garbage and be clean?
