You may have to work at it

My Nikkel’s Worth column

If you are a “glass half-full” type of person, you try to see the positive in any situation.

Am I right? If you are one of these people, the days we are in right now would be severely testing that, I am sure.

I have to admit that I am not always a “half-full” type of person, but it is something I have to work at.

A similar comparison could be made in this way. Before I was married, I had a girlfriend who loved to sing, but by her own admission, she wasn’t as naturally gifted as her sister, who was an incredibly talented singer.

For my girlfriend, she had to work at it and put real effort into singing, but she did it because she loved singing, and the effort was worth it for her.

In the same way, there are people who are just naturally happy and positive, usually “morning” people who pop out of bed smiling.

For the rest of us, we grumble and scowl until we’ve had some coffee and a shower, and we take some time to fully be awake.

How does one stay positive when it almost seems like we’re on the brink of the Apocalypse out there?

I think one way is to be appreciative of what you do have as opposed to what you don’t have.

Do you have a family around you? Then be thankful for them, and help them stay safe. If you are cut off from your family, then you might have to work at it, and make an effort to stay in contact with them. There are ways and means available now that simply weren’t there five or 10 years ago, and you could make use of them to access your family, or your passions.

You may love reading, as I do, but find it hard because the library is closed and shopping is very limited. This is where you can support those local businesses that sell books, or use an app like Audible and access new materials online.

If you love music, it’s the same thing. There are innumerable resources available that can provide you with music.

Now, if you are a Luddite (as I once was), or someone who simply will not go on Facebook or buy a smartphone, then you have to get creative and look for ways to keep your mind and spirit and body active and healthy.

There are options available on TV, ranging from network television shows to streaming services like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime. If you love movies, you could see what places like Wal-Mart has available on DVD or Blu-Ray for both new releases and older movies.

You could get creative on your own, such as learn how to play the guitar, try your hand at writing a story or a poem, drawing or painting, or making crafts. There are ways to stay positive and active, if you look for them and make an effort, and in the end you will be a better person for it.
