WEYBURN – A series of thefts targeting essential traffic signs caused significant financial loss and safety concerns.

According to Weyburn Police Service (WPS), contractors working on major projects across the city have reported a repeated pattern of stolen detour and traffic control signs. The most impacted areas have been Township Road 90, with three signs taken, and 16th Street was hit twice.

In total, 12 signs, three stands, and one set of highway legs have been stolen. The replacement cost for the stolen equipment is estimated to be about $10,000.

“Beyond the financial impact, stolen signs create serious safety risks by sending vehicles down unsuitable roads, delaying traffic, or leading drivers into active worksites,” said Deputy Chief Shane St. John of Weyburn Police Service in a media release.

“Police remind the public that tampering with or removing traffic control devices is a serious offence that jeopardizes the safety of workers and motorists.”

Anyone with information regarding these or any other criminal matters is encouraged to contact the Weyburn Police Service at (306) 848-3250, the local RCMP Detachment at 310-RCMP (7267), or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
