The 60th Labour Day Classic may be five days away, but the excitement is building. Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski, in a ceremony outside of City Hall on Monday, raised the Saskatchewan Roughriders flag along with running back A.J. Ouellette and linebacker Jameer Thurman.
The Riders retro logo flag will fly at City Hall all week and across the Albert Street bridge, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the iconic yearly matchup.
Sunday will be Bachynski’s first Labour Day Classic as mayor of Regina, and he is proud of the tradition that brings the city and province together in pride, passion and community spirit.
“The Labour Day Classic is a cherished tradition that unites our city in pride, passion and community spirit. Raising the Roughriders flag at City Hall is our way of honouring 60 years of unforgettable memories and celebrating the unwavering loyalty of Rider Nation.”
Riders President and CEO Craig Reynolds confirmed that Sunday’s sold out game will be the highest attended Riders game ever at Mosiac Stadium thanks to the addition of some innovative standing room only spots.
“For 60 years the annual Labour Day Classic has brought Rider fans together at Mosaic Stadium, creating one of the most electric game day experiences in professional sports.”
Reynolds knows that the pride is felt corner-to corner in the province and encourages all communities to paint their community green, showing support at their homes, cottages and businesses as well as ensuring they wear their best game day green all week long.
He’s also excited for for Rider Nation to descend upon the Queen City.
“We know seeing the Roughrider flag at City Hall and along the bridge will be a source of pride for all our fans as they gather to bring the noise when we play the Blue Bombers on Sunday.”
