REGINA -- Everyone involved with the Canadian Football League game between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Calgary Stampeders in Regina on Friday night had hoped the worst case scenario wouldn't develop, but in the end, the poor air quality conditions left their hands tied.
As a result, the contest at Mosaic Stadium was postponed after a delay of nearly four hours and will now be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Roughriders president and CEO Craig Reynolds spoke to the media after the postponement and offered an extensive explanation as to how things came about, and you can watch that below:
The game was originally postponed from 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. due to exceptionally poor air quality at the original kick-off time, and then delayed indefinitely. That turned into a potential start time of 10:45 p.m., but with conditions worsening, the decision was made to cancel the game after a delay of three hours and 45 minutes.
League protocol indicated that the game would be postponed if kick-off couldn't take place at 10 p.m., but the decision was made to allow warm-ups to take place at 10:45 p.m., which would have mean an 11:15 p.m. start time.
Here's the official announcement:

Air quality deteriorated in Regina throughout the afternoon and improved slightly in the evening before again worsening. with particulate matter readings at Mosaic Stadium over 130 across the board when things were finally cancelled -- well beyond the highest level of the scale at 100. Environment Canada had expected conditions to improve substantially in the late evening, but little changed.
Be sure to catch the 620 CKRM Co-operators Rider Broadcast Network pre-game show with Teagan Witko, Justin Dunk, and Wes Cates at 1:30 p.m. Dave Thomas and Luc Mullinder have the game call at 2 p.m. And a quick note: air quality is expected to be in the 2-Low Risk range around 3 a.m. and will remain there throughout the day.
