Women’s hockey in Saskatchewan is making history this fall with the launch of the Saskatchewan Senior Women’s Hockey League (SSWHL).

The province’s first and only competitive senior women’s league has officially announced the line-up for its inaugural South Division, featuring five teams set to compete in a 12-game regular season during the 2025-26 campaign.

The South Division teams include:

  • Grenfell Prairie Fire

  • Southeast Saints

  • Reign Hockey Club

  • Gull Lake Falcons

  • Odessa Bruins

The creation of the SSWHL fills a long-standing gap in Saskatchewan, where men’s senior hockey boasts 24 leagues, yet no equivalent competitive outlet previously existed for women beyond junior or university levels.

“This league is about opportunity,” SSWHL founder Megan Leblanc said. “We want to give women the chance to keep competing at a high level, while inspiring the next generation to see that hockey doesn’t have to end after junior or college.”

The calibre of play promises to be strong. Rosters feature athletes with experience in the NCAA, USports, ACAC, Team Canada programs, junior, AAA, and AA hockey. Just as importantly, the players represent a wide cross-section of Saskatchewan life—teachers, farmers, business owners, coaches, and moms—all united by their commitment to the sport and their communities.

And this is just the beginning. With the South Division now confirmed, league officials have announced that a North Division will be unveiled soon, expanding opportunities for even more women across the province.
