SPORTS SCOPE: Little League World Series beauty

Every August, I can’t help but tune into the Little League World Series, and as a Canadian, it’s extra special when one of our own teams takes the field. Baseball doesn’t always get the spotlight here the way hockey does, but the LLWS reminds me how deeply the game is loved across the country.

From small-town diamonds in B.C. to prairie ballparks in Saskatchewan to little leagues in Ontario and the Maritimes, kids are playing for the same reason: they just love the game.

What I enjoy most about the LLWS is the purity of it. These aren’t professionals; they’re kids representing their communities and, in Canada’s case, an entire country. The pride they play with is contagious. Win or lose, they carry themselves with sportsmanship that’s worth celebrating.

And when Canada makes a run, it unites fans coast to coast. For a few weeks, we’re reminded that baseball here is alive and well—and that our young players can compete with the best in the world. Watching them face off against powerhouse teams from the U.S., Japan, or Latin America is inspiring, not just for fans but for the next generation of Canadian ballplayers dreaming big.

The Little League World Series proves every year that baseball is bigger than borders, but as a Canadian, it’s always a point of pride to see our kids take the field and show the world what this country can do.
