"We often overlook value because we can't see past a rough exterior. We miss out on opportunities because our perception of the superficial becomes reality. Stories however, have the power to alter perception, and ultimately value..."
It's a great story of human spirit and it just goes to show, you cannot, nor should you ever, judge a book by its cover.
Just a short couple of weeks ago, 53 year old Ted Williams was homeless and living on the streets of Columbus, Ohio. Sporting a cardboard sign that read "Any Help Will be Gratefully Appreciated," he didn't have much more on his daily agenda than to worry about where his next meal would come from and how to keep warm. Unkempt and disheveled he was the kind of person the average driver would make sure to lock their door when passing by as they pretended to be engaged in some activity until the light turned green. That was then and this is now. Everything has changed.
Recently interviewed as a part of a "homeless" story, it was soon discovered Williams had talent and a voice that's nothing short of amazing. He had previously served three years in the United States Army. Honorably discharged, he then attended school for voice acting. A radio career was his dream - since the age of 14. With professional voice training under his belt his dreams began to unfold. And then drugs and alcohol took over his life for the next 15 years. He's been clean since 2008 yet the years had taken their toll.
But when William's one-of-a-kind voice was heard on YouTube he was an overnight sensation and he stole the hearts of North Americans. Job offers poured in and within days his life was forever changed. As I type, he's settling into a new job and a new home (offered free by his new employer). Just like that, his story has changed and Williams has been given a second chance.
"It's totally, totally amazing," he says. "I'm just so thankful... I can't believe what's going on... God gave me a million dollar voice and I just hope I can do right by him." Gone are the days of begging, he's got a whole new future before him. It's a story that warms the heart.
"... do yourself, and the world a favour, look beyond the looks' next time you meet someone. Susan Boyle was a diamond in the rough waiting to be discovered, and there are millions just like her... See with your heart, not just your eyes, and be amazed at the wonderful people who come into your life." - Brianna Popsickle
