Curling, hockey and ringette off to Winter Games semi-finals

Curling, hockey and ringette are all off to semi finals today.

REGINA - Four more medals were won by Team Saskatchewan at the 2023 Canada Winter Games. Curling, hockey and ringette are all off to semi finals today.

TEAM SASKATCHEWAN IN DEPTH:

SPEED SKATING - LONG TRACK

  • After ice conditions cut competition short on Wednesday, Saskatchewan made the most of their opportunities on Thursday. The team won four more medals on the Halifax Oval to bring our Team Sask Winter Games’ total to nine.

  • Early in the day the team picked up a pair of medals in the men’s 5,000m. Bon Lowe had a tremendous race to earn silver while Luca Veeman earned Bronze. Serena Dallaire had a great race in the female 3,000m long track event and earned a bronze medal, her second of the Winter Games. She was just 00:00:51 behind the 2nd place finisher. The final medal of the day came in the men’s team pursuit. The team of Veeman, Lowe, along with Daniel Pauli of Warman, and Fergus Owen English of Saskatoon finished 2nd in a photo finish. They fell short of gold by 00:00.51.

CURLING - FEMALE

  • It took all eight ends and came down to the final stone but Hannah Rugg and her Regina rink are off to the Canada Games’ semi-final.

  • The team will play Nova Scotia in the semi final Friday morning starting at 8 a.m. CST.

HOCKEY - MALE

  • On Thursday afternoon in Summerside, Team Sask met Nova Scotia in a Canada Games quarter final. Saskatchewan jumped out to an early lead and overcame a second period lull to win 7-2. Kazden Mathies had a pair of shorthanded goals to help pace Sask to the win. 

  • On Friday the team will meet Quebec in the semis at 2 p.m. CST. 

RINGETTE - FEMALE

  • Drama for Team Sask in the quarter final. The team scored three-straight goals in the fourth to beat New Brunswick 5-4 on Thursday. Kylee Banerd had three goals and an assist in the win and leads the Canada Games in scoring with 14 points.

  • They now play Alberta on Friday at 1 p.m. CST in the semis. 

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

  • Team Sask dropped its quarter final game to Alberta 66-40 on Thursday evening. Jordan Bortis led Team Sask with 17 points. The team is now into placement games and will likely face Ontario on Friday at 11 a.m CST.

SPEED SKATING - SHORT TRACK

  • On Thursday was the 500m finals and 1,000m prelims in North Rustico. Liam McKague and Max Williams were Saskatchewan’s top two male finishers ending up 32nd and 33rd respectively. In the women’s 500m, Cara Harms had great day finishing in 19th as Team Sask’s best female skater. Sophia Hrycuik finished 30th.

  • On Friday, it will be the 1,000m finals. 

TABLE TENNIS

  • Table tennis singles begin on Thursday morning. Aryanna Liu split her to matches with a win and a loss. Lucy Fan won all three of her preliminary group matches on Thursday. In stage 2, Aryanna Liu won her first match but dropped her second match to miss advancing to the quarters. Fan, however, won both her matches to cap a great day and has booked a spot in the quarterfinals.

  • Fan will take on Alice Provencher of Quebec in Friday’s quarterfinal.

KARATE

  • Thursday was the final day of competition for Karate. Kumite - 59 kg female action in Summerside saw Aryanna Charles of Saskatoon in action. She did not register any wins.

  • This ends Karate and athletes can enjoy PEI for the last days.

SQUASH

  • In the female team competition, Saskatchewan, playing in the consolation side, won their only match of the day. They will continue play in the consolation on Friday with two games scheduled. 

  • In the male team competition, Team Sask, also in the consolation, won their only match and will continue play with two matches scheduled for Friday.

GYMNASTICS - TRAMPOLINE

  • Thursday was mixed trampoline at East Link Centre. Saskatchewan’s athletes had great routines and finished in seventh place.

  • Wilson Reimche his best routine of the entire week. 

  • This was the final day for competition for our athletes.

GYMNASTICS - ARTISTIC

  • Thursday was the all around female finals in Charlottetown. A good day for the girls and Rylee Miller of Saskatoon finished seventh. 

  • On Friday it will be male and female individual apparatus finals at the East Link Centre starting at 7 a.m. CST.

BIATHLON

  • Action resumed on Thursday with the 12.5 km individual male and the 10 km individual female finals. Rhiann Arnold was Saskatchewan’s top finisher with a 4th place finish. She was just 15 seconds off bronze. 

  • On Friday there will be single mixed relays beginning at 10 a.m. CST. 

FREESTYLE SKIING

  • Our Freestyle skiers are back on the schedule after a couple of training and travelling days. They are now at Crabbe Mountain. Male and female moguls are on tap with qualification starting at 9 a.m. CST
