Week two of Canada Winter Games continues for Team Sask athletes

REGINA - Day 10 at the 2023 Canada Winter Games was quiet for Team Saskatchewan athletes. The day was mostly filled with training, ended with the women’s hockey team playing B.C. to open week two of competition.

TEAM SASKATCHEWAN IN DEPTH:

HOCKEY - FEMALE

  • Hockey was the only sport to open competition on day 10 of the Canada Winter Games. Saskatchewan is looking to improve upon a sixth-place finish at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer. 

  • On Monday, Team Sask was facing 2019 bronze medal winning BC in its opener. BC jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first before Saskatchewan settled down a bit. Team BC continued to press, taking a 3-0 lead into the first intermission and went on to win 11-1.

  • Along with BC, Team Sask is in a pool with the 2019 silver medalists from Quebec, and Team New Brunswick, who finished 7th in 2019.

  • On Tuesday, the team will play its second preliminary round game when they meet Quebec at 2 p.m. CST in Summerside.

CURLING - MIXED DOUBLES

  • Team Sask will be part of the first ever Mixed Doubles curling game at the Canada Games on Tuesday morning. They’ll play in the opening draw against Newfoundland beginning at 8 a.m. CST.

  • Saskatchewan’s team is made up of 17-year-old Dylan Derksen of Hague alongside 16-year-old Melissa Rose Remeshylo of Warman. 

  • All Mixed Doubles will be played at the Montague Curling Club.

CURLING - MALE

  • Saskatchewan’s male curling team hits the ice against Quebec Tuesday morning in draw one. The game is scheduled for 8am CST at the Silver Fox Entertainment Complex in Summerside.

  • The team is skipped by 17-year-old Deon Laventure of Leoville. Jayden Dauvin (17) of Spiritwood will throw lead stones, Bohdan Booth (18) is the second, and 16-year-old Karstin Soucy of Leoville will throw third stones.

  • The team will play Newfoundland in their second game, scheduled for 12 p.m. CST.

BADMINTON

  • Preliminary round play gets underway Tuesday morning in mixed doubles. Chris Chen (19) and Jenny Liu (17) of Regina open play at 7:15 a.m. CST while Nataly (17) and Nyklaas (20) Eng of Regina begin play at 8 a.m. CST.

  • Male and female singles play will also get underway on Tuesday. Saskatchewan will have four males and three females competing.

  • Badminton will be held at Chi-Wan Young Sport Centre in Charlottetown.

SNOWBOARD

  • Qualification heats start in men’s and women’s Slopestyle on Tuesday morning. Heats are scheduled for 8am CST. Finals will take place in the afternoon beginning around 12 p.m. CST.

  • Eryn and Eva Firnesz of Regina are competing on the women’s side. Cohen Davidsen, Owen Kolisnyk and Harrison Magus of Saskatoon, along with Sebastian Murphy of Estevan and Jacob Proctor of Langham compete on the men’s side.

ALPINE SKIING

  • The Super G will go on Tuesday at Crabbe Mountain. 

  • Mira Kiefer of Regina, Danica Laventure of Leoville, Brook Mack of Meota, Addison Avree Rumancik of Fort Qu’Appelle, Eva Schafer of Makwa, Ava Starkebaum of Regina, and Jacklyn Sten of Canwood compete in the women’s event scheduled for 8:25 a.m. CST.

  • Joe Allan of Regina, Ty Annand of Nipawin, Jesse and Ryan Jaimeson of Battleford, Zach Kirk of Stranraer, Cole Krushelniski of Saskatoon, and Reichen Schoeman of Yorkton compete on the men’s side. It’s scheduled for 9:50 a.m. CST.

FIGURE SKATING

  • In North Rustico, the Short Program will start Tuesday night for the pre-novice males. Skaters Rowan Lewis Gray and Eric Swalm of Moose Jaw will skate for Saskatchewan. The short program is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST.

BOXING

  • The first ever female boxing matches at a Canada Games will happen Tuesday afternoon in Summerside. Action for both men’s and women’s boxing will start at 4 p.m. CST daily and be held at the Canada Games Multi Sport Dome at Credit Union Place.

  • Three members of the team will see action Tuesday. Alex MacKenzie in the 60 Kg women’s event and Kaeden Hunter, 63.5 Kg category, and Franklin Moo, 57 Kg event, will also see their first action. Shay Khinochik in the 67 Kg group will step into ring on Wednesday.

  • It is a double knockout draw each boxer will have a minimum of two bouts.
