Farm Safety Day aims to protect kids

Kids on the farm live in a workplace, their friends come visit a workplace, they help out in that workplace and they experience all the dangers inherent of a place filled with big machines, construction and other dangers. That is why it’s important for kids to know how to stay safe. The 2017 Farm Safety day gave kids, whether from the farm or from town, the chance to learn how to be safe whether at work or play.

Glen Duck, executive director of the Saskatchewan Association of Ag Societies and Exhibitions, explains that they host these days because keeping kids safe is extremely important. He praises the volunteers that came out to the event, including Pattison Agriculture, EMW, Parkland Search and Rescue, Sunrise Health Region, Gallagher Centre Water Park, SAASE and Sask Power, the Yorkton Fire Department and Yorkton New Holland for their efforts in helping kids understand how to be safe.

“There have been a lot of accidents involving kids, it’s very important.”

Many of the stations were interactive, whether it was showing off safety equipment, showing dangers that can exist in a yard, showing how to use a fire extinguisher or showing what to look for to keep yard equipment safe.

Getting kids from all walks of life to visit the safety day is a priority because it helps everyone stay safe, whether they live on a farm or they just have friends that do.

“There are a lot of kids who don’t necessarily live on a farm or work on a farm, but will visit a farm. It’s important for them to just be aware of what they need to do to stay safe around large equipment.”
