Plans are in motion to create a new Rest Stop & Dog Park along Norway Road in Canora at the Highway 5 intersection.

CANORA - It looks like Canora will be getting a new attraction for travelers, especially those with canine companions.

At the June 3 town council meeting, Mayor Mike Kwas and town council approved the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee's latest fundraising project, the Tourist Rest Stop & Dog Park. The land is located along Norway Road near the north junction with Highway 5, according to Brandi Zavislak, community development officer and fundraising committee member.

“The tourism committee wanted to tackle this revitalization project as it is a great area for a tourist rest stop on one of the busiest highways in Saskatchewan,” said Zavislak. “Currently there is an abandoned house on the land location and it will be demolished under the development and planning budget,” said Zavislak.

“Once the house is demolished we have plans to level out the land, cut down lots of vegetation, clean it up nicely; adding picnic tables, perennials and some bathroom facilities. This will be both for travelers who would like to take a rest on their travels or for local residents to enjoy for outdoor picnics or visits with friends and family.”

Deeper into the town-owned lots Zavislak said they will also be building a dog park which will facilitate both smaller dogs and larger ones alike.

“This land location is the perfect location for a dog park area as it is secluded, treed and there is access to water and power for proper lighting.”

It is expected to be a multi-phase project that will take a couple years to complete.

“This location is a very high traffic area which is located kitty corner to our memorial gardens,” added Zavislak. “This will compliment the memorial gardens beautifully and will be used frequently not only buy our residents but also from tourists.

“The tourism committee looks forward to updating the community as the project progresses.”
