Assiniboine River Archery Club 3D shoot focuses on fun

They didn’t keep track of results this time around and just made it a fun shoot, after hearing that people were more interested in having a good time than in competing.

The Assiniboine River Archery Club celebrated its 30th annual 3D shoot at the Doug and Debbie Lapitsky farm east of Canora on Aug. 9-10, and like many outdoor events in Saskatchewan, the weather fluctuated plenty over the weekend, according to Desiree Owchar, club president.

“Overall the weekend went really well, but we had a smaller crowd on Saturday due to the rain,” said Owchar, “then Sunday was very busy with the beautiful sunny weather. We had tremendous community support."

There were 47 registered archers on Saturday and 62 on Sunday. In addition to Canora, other Saskatchewan communities represented included: Sturgis, Moosomin, Melville and Yorkton, as well as Minitonas and Birtle into Manitoba.

“Local archers attended a Birtle shoot recently, so it was nice to see them support our event as well,” said Owchar.

At the site they had a practice area set up, where archers could shoot at targets of several different distances so make sure their sights are set correctly, so they can shoot accurately at a variety of distances on the course and also hopefully not lose their arrows.

Unlike previous years, Owchar said they didn’t keep track of results this time around, and just made it a fun shoot.

“People told us they were more looking to just have a good time with buddies and families, without competing  Previously, people had to be off the course at a certain time for us to compile results and winners. This year we had no rushing.”

To celebrate the 30th annual event, the club made a number of special giveaways to draw winners in both junior (under 14) and senior (over 15) categories. Prizes included archery targets, hunting gear and gift certificates.

The event is not restricted to only archery. There is a full concession, a beer garden, music, and silent auction and a bucket draw.

“Some people like to just walk the trail and enjoy nature, check out the targets, they find it interesting,” said Owchar.

Owchar said the club is deeply appreciative to the Lapitskys for making their land available for the 3D shoot

“Otherwise it would be very hard to find a suitable location that’s big enough for two courses, their farm is pretty much the perfect location,” said Owchar. “The A course is more shaded and near the river, and the B course is sunnier, more wide open. We try to set up the targets just like they would be in nature.”

“The Assiniboine River Archery Club wants to thank the community for the continued support and the support of sponsors. We are also grateful to our club members all their help in getting set up and cleaning up afterward.”
