Canora Supers split first two playoff games

Supers take Game 1 at home, but unable to close out the first-round series in Langenburg.

CANORA- Thanks to their first-place finish in the Southeast Senior Baseball League regular season standings, the Supers drew a first-round matchup with the Langenburg Legends in a best of three semifinal series.

Things got off to a great start in Game 1 in Canora as the Supers pumped out 16 hits, while pitcher Kody Rock threw a complete game for a 13-4 victory and a 1-0 series lead.

Rock tossed seven innings, while allowing just four hits and four runs (all unearned) with nine strikeouts to pick up the win, according to Greg Andreychuk, player/coach.

“The bats were in fine form as seven Supers each recorded two hits, including: Rock, Derek Palagian, Travis Mentanko, Kholton Shewchuk, Brendon Landstad, Ian Quewezance and Jeff Stewart,” said Andreychuk. “Rock and Phil Sobkow each hit a home run. The game was blown open in the bottom of the fifth as the Supers scored five to put the game out of reach.”

Game 2 of the series in Langenburg the following evening turned out to be a different story. The Supers looked to close out the series, but the Legends had other plans as they racked up 18 hits in a 12-6 victory to tie the series at 1-1.

“The game was scoreless after two complete innings, and then the Supers rallied for three in the top of the third,” reported Andreychuk. “However, the wheels fell off in the bottom of the inning as the Legends put up five runs in the third, and six in the fourth to thwart the Supers comeback attempt.”

Travis Mentanko drove in five runs, including a three-run home run and a two-run single, to lead the offense. Derek Palagian was three for three at the plate with three singles. However, the offence just couldn't get enough going on this evening.

Kholton Shewchuk took the loss on the mound, going three innings and allowing five runs. Tanner Denesowych pitched one inning, while Shae Peterson finished off the final two.

With the loss, the best-of-three series was tied 1-1 with the deciding game set for July 20 in Canora. The Yorkton Marlins were waiting in the wings to face the winner in the league championship final after defeating the Parkland Pirates in the other semifinal.
