The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 25 calls from May 12 to May 18, some of which included: three 911 Act, two wellbeing checks, one Coroners Act, one breach of peace, one fraud, two suspicious person/vehicle, three mischief, one theft, six traffic offences, one Fire Prevention Act, one other provincial situation, and one other federal occurrence.
Vehicle on fire
On May 13, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a report of a vehicle fire near Ketchen. The Sturgis Fire Department attended the scene and extinguished the fire.
Looking for help
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded on May 14 to a report of a confused elderly male banging on the door of a residence in Canora asking for help. It was determined the male required medical assistance and he was taken to the Canora Hospital.
Scam
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a fraud complaint from Sturgis involving a Kijiji buy-and-sell advertisement on May 16. The buyer requested a down payment for an item to be held and delivered. The complainant sent the money to the seller who failed to show up with the item. Police would like to remind the public to ask questions before sending money. If the seller does not seem legit, do not send them money. If you have questions about being a possible victim or target of a fraud, please contact your local RCMP Detachment for advice.
Careless driving
On May 16, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to investigate several reports of a young male driving carelessly around the town of Sturgis. Police have identified the driver and continue to investigate the matter.
Young climbers
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on May 17 to a report of three young girls climbing on a building in Canora. Police followed up and determined bricks on the building were possibly damaged by the youth. Police continue to investigate.
COVID Check
On May 17, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP followed up a COVID-19 compliance check for a traveller who returned to the Canora area. Federal guidelines issued under the Quarantine Act still require some travellers to adhere to the 14-day isolation period when returning to Canada.
Shoplifting
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint on May 17 of shoplifting at the Canora Co-op grocery store. A suspect was identified and will be charged with theft for stealing meat and other items.
Rude behaviour
A complainant walked into the Canora RCMP Detachment on May 18 requesting police speak to an 11-year-old boy for swearing and giving him the middle finger while he rode away on his bike. The identity of the youth was unknown and police decided that further investigation into the matter was not required.
