CANORA - Canora Composite School was well represented at Cross Country Provincials in Humboldt on October 16, with seven student athletes competing, reported coaches Leona Kitchen and Thomas Lowes. When it was all said and done, Canora finished a solid second in the 2A school team category, which involves schools with 41 to 85 eligible students.

“After having a year off due to extra-curricular restrictions, we were afraid that our numbers would be down and it would take a little more work to get the runners to their fullest potential,” said the coaches.

“But as always, our athletes rose to the challenge! The great part about taking a team to Provincials is that the runners can be rewarded for their hard work in the team category. This year they are the silver medalists. This is a very deserving team and we are extremely proud of their dedication, perseverance, and hard work!

At provincials, in the junior boys 4km race: Hunter Lamb finished 11th out of 80 runners with a time of 15 minutes, 59 seconds. Cole Marcinkoski placed 25th with a time of 17 minutes even, followed by Porter Wolkowski in 30th at 17:46 and Jack Craig in 64th at 20:09.

Meadow Ostafie finished 24th out of 44 runners in the junior girls 4km race with a time of 21 minutes, 37 seconds.

In the senior boys 5km race with 90 runners taking part, Toby Olynyk placed 53rd  in 22:03, followed by Dawson Zuravloff in 64th with a time of 22:39.

“This has been a really successful season for all of our runners. They have had great weather to practice and compete, plus the injuries and sickness have been minimal!” concluded the coaches.
