CJES athletes achieve many medals and personal bests in Yorkton

Canora Grade 4 students earned a total of nine medals at the Showcase Track and Field Meet in Yorkton

Grade 4 students from Canora Composite School attended the Showcase Track and Field Meet in Yorkton on June 7, bringing home a haul of nine medals and many top-10 finishes.

A total of 260 grades 4 and 5 students from throughout the Good Spirit School Division, by meeting standards in their own schools, earned the opportunity to compete in the division-wide event, according to Jennifer Prychak, teacher and coach.

“The day was filled with a few nerves, but nine Grade 4 students from CJES took part in the track meet and had an outstanding day,” said Prychak.

She shared several highlights from the big day:

•           All three Grade 4 girls made it out of the 100m qualifiers to be able to compete in the final.

•           Kenzee Kopelchuk won gold in high jump and bronze in the 100m final.

•           Courtlyn Heshka walked away from the day with four medals.

•           The 4x100m relay team put on a thrilling race to take the bronze medal.

Event results and top-10 finishes were as follows.

Courtlyn Heshka won gold in the girls 100 metres in a time of 14.21 seconds, gold in the girls long jump with a distance of 3.18 metres, silver in the girls shot put with a throw of 5.46 metres, and bronze in the 4x100-metre relay as the third runner in a time of 1:05:02. Other team members from CCS included Angel Sleeva, (second), and Karter Shukin (anchor). Heshka was also eighth in the girls high jump.

Kenzee Kopelchuk cleared 1.10 metres to claim gold in the girls high jump, and then took bronze in the 100 metres in 16.02 seconds. She also finished fourth in long jump and ninth in shot put.

Angel Sliva placed fourth in the girls 100 metres in a time of 16.71 seconds, and eighth in the long jump.

In addition to his 4x100 bronze medal, Karter Shukin grabbed sixth in the boys 800 metres with a time of 3:03:24, and seventh in the 100 metres at 15:55.

Other student/athletes from CJES who competed in Yorkton were: Hudson Matychuk (high jump and long jump), Kolton Unick (high jump), Seth Propp (shot put) and Yuri Olynick (100 metres).
