CANORA - New details have been released on an internet outage that affected Canora Composite School and the entirety of the Good Spirit School Division in late February.

On March 3, 2024, teachers and staff from the Good Spirit School Division confirmed that the school division was the victim of a cyber-attack. The outage affected numerous necessities such as computer and Chromebook access, Edsby services, phones link to the schools, along with most Wi-Fi networks linked with the division. While Chromebook services were for the most part back up and running from March 4-7, students were still not allowed to use desktop computers that schools provided. Students and staff also started to realize that the internet has also been noticeably lagging and slow when using Chromebooks for classes. It has not been made clear if any arrests have been made following the cyber-attack.

Students build quinzee

A number of Grade 12 students from Canora Composite School teamed up with both Grade 5 classes to build a massive snow fort in the school courtyard. The project only took three full hours to complete over the span of two days. On March 6, the Grade 12s and 5s shovelled a bunch of snow into a massive pile and on March 7, students spent two hours digging out the hill they had created the previous day. By 3 p.m. the quinzee was able fit not only the teacher Curtis Baillie and the Grade 12 students involved, but entirety of the 5B class. The reasons students built the fort in the first place was for a Grade 12 physical education leadership project, plus Canora had just received a massive snow storm which brought about 25 to 50 centimetres of the white stuff to the Parkland region in some parts. The project was considered a massive success.

Global Story of The Week: Mass killing in Ottawa

Canada’s capital is in mourning after that city’s worst mass killing in its history. According to CTV News, six people, all from Sri Lanka, were stabbed to death inside a home on the night of March 6 night in Ottawa’s Barrhaven neighborhood. Another person who was inside the home was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The 19-year-old suspect was taken into custody and charged with six counts of murder. During an investigation it turned out the suspect, who was also Sri Lankan, was living inside the home at the time without the landlord knowing. On March 9, a vigil was held for the six mass stabbing victims, which included a baby less than three months old. The investigation into the killings continues.
