CANORA - The Canora Composite School junior boys’ basketball team went into the ECDAA District Championship in Preeceville on March 3-4 with high hopes, and won the gold medal as district champs for the first time in a decade. Coach Kim Eiteneier said strong team play was probably the biggest factor in the undefeated weekend, starting with a 15-point win over Columba on Friday night.

“It was a close game until the fourth quarter and then we pulled away,” said Eiteneier. “Andrew Owchar led the way offensively with 24 points.

“Game 2 was Saturday afternoon vs. Sacred Heart School of Yorkton. This was also a close game for a long stretch, we were up by six at half, six at quarter three time, and we closed it out with a 10-point victory. The game star was Linden Roebuck with 10 defensive blocks.”

The championship final was a defensive battle against Yorkton Regional High School. Once again, the game wasn’t decided until late.

“We won 30-28,” reported Eiteneier. “We were up by one after the first, three points at half, and then down by three after three quarters. We won it with great team defense.

“Game stars were Andrew Owchar with great defense and 21 of our 30 points, and Linden Roebuck with double-digit blocks once again.”

Eiteneier and the Cougars can now look back on a very successful season, including the team’s first district championship since 2013. The team’s overall record was 16 wins and only one loss.
