Curlers gather for fun competition at Canora Mixed Bonspiel

Canora rink comes out on top of three-day bonspiel

Curlers from Canora and the surrounding area took part in the Canora Mixed Bonspiel at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre on March 18 to 20.

A total of 10 teams were entered and each played three games under the Brandon Draw format.

Ten points were awarded for a win, five points for a tie, two points for each end won, and zero points for a blank end. In the eight-end games, the maximum score per game was 26 points.

First place in the bonspiel went to the local Bob Kolodziejski foursome, including: Kolodziejski at skip, Robin Ludba played third, Brenden Halchyshak at second and Valérie Caza shot lead rocks. The Kolodziejski foursome played their third game in the early draw on Sunday, and with 72 total points they could not be caught. As a result, the final draw was all about deciding second place. The Travis Ostafie rink of Canora picked up 24 points in their final game to finish with 55, eventually placing third. This put some pressure on Zeno Gulka of Canora and his teammates, who entered the final game with 40 points.

But the Gulka foursome posted a solid 20 points in their final game victory over the Aaron Herriges foursome to clinch second place in the bonspiel. Initially, it looked like the game would be a breeze for Gulka and his teammates, as they scored single points in each of the first four ends. Then the momentum swung the other way as the Herriges side came up with five points in the next three ends, including a clutch raise takeout by skip Terry Wilson to steal a point in the sixth. But in the final end, the Gulka rink staged a comeback of their own and scored a big two points for a 6-5 win.

In addition to those mentioned earlier, other teams entered in the bonspiel were Kristen Worobetz of Preeceville, and local rinks Brigitte Herriges, Peter Wiwchar, Robert Waselenko, Ally Rock and Kris Currie.
