In-line inspection of Swan River NPS 6 gas line begins July 21

Line spans route from Norquay to Benito, Man.
Natural Gas Flare
Natural gas will be released from the gas line in a controlled burn called a flare.

REGINA — SaskEnergy is planning to complete an in-line inspection of the Swan River NPS 6 gas line.

The line is 39.1 kilometres in length and begins at the Block Valve Site located approximately 0.75 kilometres southwest of the town of Norquay, within the RM of Keys. The line ends at the Meter Station Site approximately 3.5 kilometres south of the village of Benito, Man. within the Municipality of Swan Valley West. This maintenance work is expected to take place during the week of July 21.

During the in-line inspection, natural gas will be released from the gas line in a controlled burn called a flare. While the gas line will be isolated from the remainder of the system, flaring is required to remove the remaining gas from the line before and during this scheduled maintenance.

During the work, the natural gas flare will be conducted intermittently during daylight hours throughout this week. Please note that this is subject to change based on weather, planning and personnel availability.

According to SaskEnergy, the flaring is necessary to support the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to customers. Flaring is an industry standard practice when natural gas needs to be removed from a line and reduces the carbon footprint of the vented natural gas by 85 per cent. Residents and drivers in the area may see a 40-foot flame being emitted from the flare stack temporarily attached to SaskEnergy’s infrastructure. The flare will only be taking place at the Block Valve Site in Benito.

The area around the flare will be supervised to ensure public safety. Residential natural gas service in the area will not be affected. SaskEnergy has notified the Municipality of Swan Valley as well as local emergency responders about this upcoming event.
