Canora/Sturgis RCMP activity report

Canora/Sturgis RCMP have responded to a wide variety of incidents recently, including a missing Canora woman found by a farmer in a field west of town, and a report of uttering threats where a projectile shot toward an unmarked police vehicle resulted in damage to a window.

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 108 calls from October 7 to October 14, some of which included: three traffic accidents, 61 provincial traffic offences, two impaired drivers, three other provincial statutes, one harassment/threat, three assaults, two thefts, five mischiefs, two frauds, one arson and eight other incidents.

Traffic safety charges

Between October 8 to 11, The Canora/Sturgis RCMP and Yorkton Traffic Services participated in Operation Impact, which is a traffic safety campaign to raise public awareness of the risks associated with engaging in dangerous and illegal driving behaviours. A total of 50 traffic offences were reported, resulting in 25 traffic-related charges in the Canora and Sturgis areas. 

Wanderer found safe

On October 9, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were called to assist in locating a missing woman from Canora. The woman was found safe and unharmed by a local farmer in a field west of Canora. 

Threats and damage

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded on October 10 to a complaint of uttering threats in Canora. During the investigation, an unoccupied parked police vehicle sustained damage to a window after a projectile was shot at it. Police continue to investigate the incident.

Deck fire

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to report of a structure fire in Canora on October 10. Police attended and discovered that the deck of a residence was intentionally set on fire. The subsequent investigation by police resulted in 59-year-old Gerald Criece of Canora being charged with arson. Criece was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on October 20.

Key vehicle damage

On October 10, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint that three vehicles in Canora were damaged after being keyed. A suspect was identified and police continue to investigate.

Vehicle intentionally disabled

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded on October 11 to a report of a motor vehicle in the ditch on Highway No. 5 west of Canora. Police attended the scene and learned that an altercation occurred inside of the vehicle. This altercation resulted in the ignition interlock device being stolen, rendering the vehicle disabled. The following day, the interlock device was returned and the occupants of the vehicle were able to return home.

Intoxicated disturbance

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance inside of a parked vehicle at the intersection of Highway No. 5 and Norway Road in Canora on October 11. Police attended and located an intoxicated female on the side of the road, yelling and screaming. The female resisted arrest and was held in cells until sober. The female was charged with mischief under $5,000 for damaging the windshield of the vehicle that she was travelling in.

Mysterious explosion

On October 13, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a loud explosion happening in the Stenen area which occurred the previous night.
