CANORA - After the return season of Canora Cobras senior hockey came to a sudden and early end a year ago, plans are underway for the new season involving the Cobras and the Sask East Hockey League (SEHL), which was formed only a year ago.

The 2021/22 schedule has been announced, and will see each team play 14 games in the seven-team league, said Terry Dennis, Canora coach. In addition to the Cobras, the other teams are: Hudson Bay, Ituna, Theodore, Langenburg, Whitewood and Rocanville.

“The Cobras will be a fast, skilled, exciting team with lots of local talent,” said Dennis. “The team lost about four or five players from last year but we have recruited six and are going to be strong again. We have players from Canora, Kamsack, Yorkton, Rama, Bredenbury, Langenburg and Melville. I think the people of Canora and area will be happy to see Senior hockey back in Canora and I expect good crowds.”

Canora and area hockey fans won’t have to wait long for the opportunity to see their team in action on the ice. The Cobras are scheduled to play their first game of the season on Friday, November 12, at home at the Canora Civic Centre versus Hudson Bay, followed by their first road game of the season the next evening in Theodore. Canora’s schedule to close out 2021 includes eight games before Christmas, five of them on home ice. The last game before the Christmas break is a home affair versus Theodore on December 18.

The 2022 portion of the schedule gets underway with the Cobras on the road against Rocanville on January 8. Canora will face a challenging test toward the end of the season with three of the final four games on the road, but the final regular season game on the schedule is a home contest versus Ituna on February 5. The playoffs will start the following weekend with all teams making the playoffs. Under league rules, all players and staff must be double vaccinated against COVID-19.

Dennis will be helped with the coaching duties by assistant coaches Terry Wilson and Kelly McTavish, with Cal Homeniuk returning as the general manager and president. The team is hoping to fill out the remaining positions on the team executive and staff at the Cobras annual meeting on October 21 at 7 p.m. at the Canora Civic Centre.
