RCMP Report: Male guilty of animal cruelty, assaulting police

A male was found guilty of assaulting a public officer and two counts of animal cruelty, and was sentenced to a six-month conditional sentence order, 12 months probation, fined $5,200, and given a lifetime prohibition order limiting the number of animals he could own.

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 70 calls from March 16 to March 23, including a disturbance at the Preeceville Rink. Numerous youths were causing problems and were asked to leave by staff, which led to an altercation. Police continue to investigate.

CANORA - The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 70 calls from March 16 to March 23, some of which included: two assaults, one breach of peace, one disturbing the peace, one false alarm, one Mental Health Act call, one mischief, two thefts, one traffic collision, one prisoner, and 60 traffic offenses.

Drunken fight

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a complaint of an assault in Canora on March 18. Police learned two intoxicated males got into a fight. Police continue to investigate.

Sex offender sentenced

A male attended Yorkton Provincial Court on March 20 and was found guilty of sexual assault.  The male was sentenced to 30 months of probation and was ordered to give a DNA sample to police.

Animal cruelty sentence

On March 20, a male attended Yorkton Provincial Court and was found guilty of assaulting a public officer and two counts of animal cruelty under the Saskatchewan Animal Protection Act.  The male was sentenced to a six-month conditional sentence order, 12 months probation, fined $5,200, and given a lifetime prohibition order limiting the number of animals he could own. The charges were a result of an investigation by the Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan and the Canora/Sturgis RCMP on June 6, 2020, in the RM of Buchanan.

Drunk driver sentenced

A male was sentenced in Yorkton Provincial Court on March 20 to 120 days in jail plus a five-year driving prohibition for refusing to provide a breath sample and a 12-month conditional sentence order for driving while prohibited. The male was stopped by police on Feb 18, 2020, on Highway 9 for impaired driving.

Patient arrested

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on March 21 to a complaint of an uncooperative patient at the Canora Hospital. Police arrested the patient for an outstanding warrant of arrest.

Rink disturbance

On March 21, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a disturbance at the Preeceville Rink. Numerous youths were causing problems and were asked to leave by staff, which led to an altercation. Police continue to investigate.

Traffic stop

Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) staged a check stop in Canora at the intersection of Highway 5 and 9 on March 23. A total of 150 vehicles were checked which led to 10 warnings, four tickets and 26 vehicle inspection notices being issued along with one child seat given away.
