Supers continue unbeaten streak to start season

The Supers offence had a field day against the Yorkton Tigers on June 4, with 25 hits in a 26-4 win.

CANORA - The Canora Supers played a pair of games to kick off June. On Wednesday, June 4 they hosted the Yorkton Tigers and came away with a 26-4 victory which was closer than the score indicated. On Friday a road trip to Saltcoats ended in a 0-0 tie.

Wednesday June 4: Supers 26 Tigers 4

Believe it or not, this game was a 5-3 Supers lead heading into the home half of the fourth inning, reported Greg Andreychuk, player/manager.

“The Supers would put up four more runs to widen the lead,” said Andreychuk, “but in the bottom of the fifth, the home team scored 17 runs in an inning that seemingly took about an hour to complete, as the game ended in a blowout.”

Derek Palagian pitched for the first time this season, and did well despite a bit of a shaky first inning. He eventually settled in and only gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits to pick up the win. Darcy Blommaert took over in the sixth inning and final inning, allowing an unearned run to finish the game off.

Kody Rock socked a pair of home runs to go along with a double and two singles. In total the Supers had 25 hits, with most of the lineup putting up multi-hit efforts. Rock wasn’t the only big hitter, as Ian Quewezance of Kamsack, Evan Rostotski of Norquay, Brendon Landstad of Canora and Darcy Blommaert of Yorkton contributed three hits apiece for the Supers.

Friday June 6: Supers 0, Saltcoats Lakers 0

The game in Saltcoats had an eerie similarity to Opening Day in Canora. Once again, on the mound it was the Supers Kody Rock vs the Lakers Matthew Spilchuk. Earlier in the year in Canora, both pitchers tossed gems, and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

“Surely this was not going to happen again,” said Andreychuk. “WRONG! Rock allowed just four singles and one hit batter with 17 strikeouts to keep the Lakers off the board. Spilchuk gave up only six hits and one walk.”

The downfall for the Supers on this day was hitting in the clutch, as they left a total of seven runners in scoring position (second and third base).

Rock had two singles and a stolen base. Jordan Auger of Russell, Man. chipped in with a double, while Riley Stewart of Yorkton, Brendan Babichuk of Invermay and Tyrel Thorpe of Langenburg each had one single apiece.

The Supers continue their unbeaten streak, with four wins and two ties in the first six games of the season.

The game scheduled for Sunday, June 8 in Grandview was rained out, but will be rescheduled at a later date.

The next action for the Supers is on June 23 with a home game against the Parkland Pirates, the defending SESBL champions.
