Supers lose first of season at home, bounce back with road win

After a pair of scoreless ties earlier in the season against the Saltcoats Lakers, the Canora Supers finally scored some runs in a big win at Saltcoats.

CANORA - The Canora Supers played a pair of games recently, at home versus the Parkland Pirates on June 11, and then hit the road June 13 to Saltcoats for a battle against the Lakers.

June 11: Parkland Pirates 9 at Supers 6

It was the first game of the year of the 2024 league final matchup. The Supers recorded nine hits and took advantage of four Pirates errors, but Greg Andreychuk, Supers player/manager, said unfortunately the Pirates got some clutch hits and good pitching in a 9-6 Supers loss.

Kody Rock of Canora led the way with a double and a home run, while a number of Supers had one hit apiece including  Derek Palagian of Hudson Bay, Ian Quewezance of Kamsack, Braden Kitchen of Yorkton, Kholton Shewchuk of Rama, Evan Rostotski of Norquay, Chaz Jaeb of Sturgis and Nathaniel Minhinnick of Invermay.

“It was a see-saw type of game, but ultimately the Pirates took advantage of opportunities more often than the Supers,” said Andreychuk.

Chaz Jaeb got the start on the hill, pitching four innings while allowing five runs (three earned) with a pair of strikeouts to take the loss. Shewchuk and Rock finished off on the mound.

June 13: Supers 6 at Saltcoats Lakers 3

The first two meetings between these clubs resulted in identical scoreless draws.

“However, the Supers offence woke up a little with six runs on 13 hits, including seven doubles, in a 6-3 victory,” said Andreychuk.

Nate Wolos got his first ever start on the mound, and held his own, allowing just three runs on five hits over four innings while recording five strikeouts to pick up the win. Kody Rock came in relief and mowed down the Lakers while allowing no hits or runs over three innings to pick up the save.

“The offence was led by Ian Quewezance with two doubles, two runs scored and two runs driven in,” said Andreychuk. “Also each recording a double were Braden Kitchen, Rock, Jordan Auger of Russell, Man. and Tyrel Thorpe of Langenburg. It was a close game all the way through, but three consecutive doubles in the top of the seventh gave us some much-needed breathing room to take home the win.”

The Supers improve their record to five wins, one loss and two ties on the season.
