CANORA - With the SESBL playoffs on the horizon, the Canora Supers continued to find ways to win, scoring a total of 33 runs in their final three games of the regular season, but also showing the ability to win the close ones.
June 20: Supers 14 at Yorkton Tigers 2
No statistics were available from the Supers decisive 14-2 victory over the Tigers in Yorkton on June 20.
July 2: Supers 13 at Parkland Pirates 1
The Supers went into Pirie Field in Melville on July 2 looking to guarantee at least a top-two placing in the league standings with a win. Ace pitcher Kody Rock of Canora was given the ball, and had his usual stellar outing. Rock allowed just one run on two hits in a Supers 13-1 rout of the Parkland Pirates, reported Greg Andreychuk, Supers player/manager.
The offence was in fine form after a lengthy hiatus, scoring 13 runs on 14 hits. The Supers scored at least one run in each of the first five innings, including a six-run outburst in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach.
“Leading the way with multi-hit games were Chaz Jaeb of Sturgis, Dylan Toffan of Canora, Riley Stewart of Yorkton and Evan Rostotski of Norquay,” said Andreychuk. “18U call-ups Paxton Lucky and Carson Woloschuk each scored a pair of runs in an all-around team effort.”
On Saturday July 5, the Grandview Lakers and Saltcoats Lakers split a double header in Grandview. This resulted in the Supers clinching first place for the sixth straight regular season.
July 7: Parkland Pirates 5 at Supers 6
The Pirates and Supers got together for a return match-up in Canora on July 7, and this one turned out to be a real nail biter, with the Supers coming back late for a walk-off 6-5 win.
Most teams rely on the first two hitters in their batting order to get on base and score runs. Chaz Jaeb and Kody Rock certainly came through for their team, scoring all six runs against the Pirates. The third and fourth spots in the order are generally relied on to drive in runs, and Nate Wolos of Canora and Braden Kitchen of Yorkton filled that role splendidly, driving in five of the Supers six-run total.
“In a thrilling finish, Kitchen came through with a two-RBI single to end the game,” said Andreychuk.
Jaeb also started the game on the mound, later receiving solid relief pitching support from Wolos and Shae Peterson of Sturgis.
Playoffs
The Supers appear to be getting hot at the right time, heading into the playoffs on a four-game winning streak.
The best-of-three first round series was scheduled get underway on July 16, with the Supers hosting the defending league champion Parkland Pirates. Game 2 was set for the following evening in Melville. If a third and deciding game is necessary, the two teams will hit Al Sapieha Field in Canora on Monday, July 21 to decide which team moves on to the league championship series.
